What’s best way to abruptly end telling an inappropriate joke at a party?
Suppose you are at a work party, you have the attention of everybody, the end of the joke could be offensive to some people in the room….
and you are midway into the joke and you realize you have a choice
1) Disappoint all your listeners and say “this joke is over, sorry”
2) Finish the joke and some people will take offense to the joke
3) Some other advice (tell a new joke, recreate a new punchline? Make believe your cell phone rang?)
what should you do?
Stop and announce that you’re worried about offending people. Warn them that it might be offensive and take the people that want to hear the joke into the corner of a room and whisper it so that the people who are worried about getting offended won’t hear it.
That’s one way. Of course, there’s always the possibility that everyone huddles into the corner. On the off-chance that happens, go back to where you were (and make some humorous remark about how you weren’t expecting that to happen) and warn people that the joke might be offensive and say it out loud.
If the joke visibly offends someone, follow it up with an uppity clean joke like the one about the psychiatrist. That’ll get people going.
If you have the chance, maybe don’t start telling the joke at all and only tell it with a small group of friends. After all, when you’re with about four friends (or four coworkers) is the best time to tell a racist, sexist, or dirty joke that will get people laughing because they know it’s wrong.
And of course your idea about pretending your phone rang (vibrated because it’s on vibrate) is a good one, too. But don’t pass up the chance to be funny when everyone is expecting you to be funny. Maybe pretend to forget the end of the joke and then tell the uppity clean joke I was talking about (see two paragraphs ago).
